SpanishBackpack.COM is a service provided by Conversa (www.conversa.com), a school in Costa Rica dedicated to teaching Spanish as a second language since 1975. The team behind SpanishBackpack.COM has been teaching Spanish as a second language for over forty years, first through an immersion program in Costa Rica, and later through live, online classes.

Andy Kaufman (andy@spanishbackpack.com)
Andy basically grew up in a Spanish training environment. His dad, Dave Kaufman, founded Conversa, a Spanish immersion program that has been operating in Costa Rica for the past 40 years. In 2003, after an engineering degree (Boston U) and an MBA (George Washington), an engineering position at Intel and a consulting job with KPMG, Andy joined the Conversa team full time.
In 2007, he led the development of ConversaConmigo, and online Spanish training program that has since served thousands of students. This is what eventually led Andy and his team to create SpanishBackpack.COM.

Dave Kaufman (dave@spanishbackpack.com)
Dave obtained his B.A. in Spanish from Ithaca College and began his Spanish language teaching career as a Peace Corps Volunteer in the Dominican Republic. He served as Spanish Language Coordinator for Peace Corps training programs in Puerto Rico. He then obtained his MS in Applied Linguistics from Georgetown University before heading to Costa Rica as Language Coordinator at a Peace Corps training center for Latin America. In 1975 Dave co-founded Conversa, a full immersion Spanish program in Costa Rica, which he runs to this day. Dave is the author of El Conversador, a Spanish grammar book that approaches the language from an English speaker's perspective. Over the past several years, Dave's input has been instrumental in developing the materials that are used in SpanishBackpack.com, from the grammar lessons to the exercises - his influence has filled the backpack to the brim.

Irene Orlich (irene@spanishbackpack.com)
Irene has been a part of the SpanishBackpack project since the idea first came about. Throughout the initial development phase, Irene's focus was always on how to keep the student engaged. She's been instrumental in the overall design of the system, always looking out for ease of use. Irene is another Georgtown grad.
